- : That's about the lot of it. Look at the reports of people who own
- : both 28.8 Sportsters and 33.6 ones.
-
- Not having ever owned a Sportster, I can't say what the reasons are
- behind the complaints. I do, however, see quite a number of them. I also
- notice that most of the complaints are the result of lack of knowledge
- about configuration. Part of the blame for that has to go to USR for
- their poor manual on the Sportster. Much of the problem is lack of
- understanding by the purchasers. I see this lack of knowledge all over
- the place. I run a BBS and you would not believe the number of callers
- who are unable to set up their modems and comm programs properly. Someday
- we'll have true "Plug & Play" where all you need ot do is plug the unit
- in and it works to its optimum but we don't have it now. These are not
- like kitchen appliances, after all. I would bet that the average
- Sportster buyer also has a VCR that is flashing "12:00" right now...

- : Not the new model Sportsters (the PnP ones), although they may be
- : based on the same source code.
-
- Is that significantly different than saying "they have essentially the
- same code"? Certainly, some things have to change because of the hardware
- requirements but the V.42/V.42bis and V.34 modulation has to be
- compatible and virtually the same.

- : good, you can use that against me..
-
- Fair enough. It is also fair to say that, at this point in time, that a
- $100 V.34 modem is worth the price. But that is hardly an endorsement.

- Interesting. I will do some checking on this. Is your ROM date 4/18/95 or
- later?

- : Well, FWIW when I had a PPI v.34 with an old firmware, it's
- : performance was very similar to that of the Sportsters, also with an old
- : firmware. Each had some strengths and weaknesses, but the PPI could
- : definatly transfer data faster then the Sportster if they were connected
- : at the same rate and not getting any signifcant amount of BERs. The
- : Motorola Power I also used to have would also outperform the Sportster
- : when using the 256 byte LAP-M packets.
-
- My Supra regularly gives me worst rates on a 28.8k connect than my USR
- Courier ever did. Even though the report is constant at R34-28800, the
- transfer rates end up at around what you would expect on a 26400 connect
- (2950-3020). I've never used a PPI so I can't comment directly on those.
- I guess, based on your observations, that PPI did a better job with their
- Rockwell chipsets.
